The Hercílio Luz Bridge (Portuguese: Ponte Hercílio Luz ) is a chain bridge in the city of Florianópolis in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina . It connects the city center on the island of Santa Catarina with the Estreito district on the mainland .

It was opened on May 13, 1926 after a construction period of three years and four months. The listed bridge is the city's landmark. It is the largest suspension bridge in Brazil and, after the Puente de Angostura in Venezuela, which was completed in 1967, the second largest in South America.

Dimensions

The bridge has a total length of 819.5 m; Of this, 339.5 m is accounted for by the central part, 259 m for the part on the island side and 221 m for the part on the mainland side.

The steel structure has a mass of approximately 5,000 tons. Approximately 14,250 m³ of concrete are built into the foundations. The two pylons are 75 m above sea level and the central arch is 43 m high and has a clear height of 30.9 m.

The Hercílio Luz Bridge has the largest span of all chain bridges in the world.

During the government of Governor Hercílio Luz , the bridge was designed as the first permanent link between the continent and the island. The governor wanted to manifest Florianópoli's claim to the seat of the capital of the state through the establishment, since with increasing settlement of the hinterland the relocation of the state government inland (e.g. to Lages ) was discussed.

The bridge was the first joint project by engineers Holton D. Robinson and David B. Steinman from the USA, who thus established their long-term collaboration. The first drafts of a cantilever bridge and a conventional suspension bridge were rejected as too expensive. In order to save costs, the lattice girder, which is usually arranged under the carriageway, was planned above it so that the required clearance height could also be achieved with a lower bridge construction. The fact that the support chains continue their parabolic line in the correspondingly shaped upper flange of the truss means that some of the chains can be saved. Construction work began on November 14, 1922. All building materials were obtained from the USA, the work was carried out by American specialists and construction workers from Santa Catarina.

The governor himself could no longer witness the opening of the bridge, as he died in 1924 after a serious illness. When it became clear that there was no longer any chance of a cure, a few days before his death a symbolic bridge opening with an eighteen-meter-long wooden replica was held on Praça XV de Novembro (the central square of the city) .

The opening of the bridge between Florianópolis and the current districts of Estreito and Coqueiros, which at that time still belonged to the city of São José, took place on May 13, 1926 and ended the residents' dependence on ferry traffic.

The name - the construction work began 100 years after Brazil's independence from Portugal - was actually Ponte da Independência ( Independence Bridge ). Instead of this name, which was also used during the construction work, the bridge was christened in memory of the governor Ponte Hercílio Luz .

For the construction, loans in the amount of twice the state budget at that time were necessary, which were not fully repaid until 1978.

In 1982 the bridge was closed for safety reasons. In 1988 it was reopened for pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles and horse-drawn vehicles. In 1991 it was closed again.

On May 13, 1997 - 71 years after the opening - the bridge, which was now in danger of collapsing, was placed under protection as a historically, architecturally and artistically significant monument, which enabled funds from the state budget to be made available for renovation.

Current usage

The bridge is the city's landmark and its most famous postcard motif. The lookout point at the abutment on the island side offers a panoramic view of the city center. The bridge museum (Museu da Ponte) and a park (Parque da Luz) are located on the adjacent site .

Attempts have been made to renovate the bridge for 33 years, which has cost well over R $ 500 million so far (as of December 2015). The government announced that it expects to reopen in April 2018. In March 2018, December 2018 was named as the new reopening date, although it has not yet been clarified whether the bridge will also be approved for freight traffic.

To replace the Hercílio Luz Bridge, the four-lane 1,252-meter-long road bridges, each parallel to the south, were built by Pedro Ivo Campos (1991) for traffic to the island and Colombo Salles (1975) for traffic to the mainland.
