The Puente de Angostura is a road bridge over the Orinoco in Venezuela near Ciudad Bolívar . It was the first bridge over the Orinoco and has the largest span of all bridges in South America.

Surname

The name of the bridge is reminiscent of the earlier name of the city, which was settled in 1764 at a narrow point of the Orinoco as Santo Tomé de Guayana de la Angostura del Orinoco (roughly: Saint Thomas of Guayana at the narrow point of the Orinoco ) and in 1846 in honor of the national hero Simón Bolívar was renamed Ciudad Bolívar .

location

The Puente de Angostura is around 5 km above Ciudad Bolívar. The Orinoco is only about 1000 m wide there; the old town of Ciudad Bolívar is located at the narrowest, 700 m wide point of the river. The bridge connects Ciudad Bolívar and thus the entire state of Bolívar in the south of the river with the state of Anzoátegui and the north of Venezuela. It is part of the four-lane, motorway-like national road 16 from El Tigre to Ciudad Bolívar.

The next bridge is the second bridge, 120 kilometers by road downstream, the Puente Orinoquia , a cable-stayed bridge for road and rail traffic opened in 2006. 370 kilometers upstream by road, the third bridge over the Orinoco is being built between Cabruta in the Las Mercedes district in the state of Guárico and Caicara del Orinoco in the Cedeño de Bolívar district , also a cable-stayed bridge for road and rail traffic, which will replace the ferry traffic that takes up to two hours To be finished in 2015.

description

The Puente de Angostura is a four-lane suspension bridge with a clearly arched bridge deck. The clear height above the navigable Orinoco is 41 m at high tide and 57 m at low tide. On the bridge, the directional lanes are only separated from each other by a double middle line on the street. The previous toll was lifted in 2008; the toll stations have since been used for various controls.

Its southern pylon stands on a rock ridge jutting 170 m into the river, the other stands in the river about 120 m in front of a ledge on the northern bank. The 119.20 m high pylons stand on round concrete foundations. Its pillars, made of a steel box girder construction, are only connected to one another at the upper end by a crossbar designed as a round arch.

The bridge has a span of 712 m in the main opening and 280 m in each of the side openings, which extend to the anchor blocks , which are clearly separated from the bank . Its length between the anchor blocks is 1272 m, including the ramp bridges leading from the outside to the anchor blocks, it is 1678.50 m long.

The carriageway girder is 16.60 m wide and consists of a 17 m high truss structure that stiffens it against vibrations and twisting caused by the wind. The four lanes of 3.65 m each are 14.6 m wide.

The 47 cm thick suspension ropes were made from 7182 wires using the air- jet spinning process .

history

A consortium consisting of the Venezuelan construction company Precomprimido CA and US Steel , which American Bridge Company had commissioned with the construction of the superstructure, was commissioned to plan and build the Puente de Angostura . The suspension bridge was designed by Sverdrup & Parcel , the prestressed concrete ramp bridges by Precomprimido. The foundation stone was laid on December 19, 1962 by Rómulo Betancourt , the then President of Venezuela. On January 6, 1967, the bridge was opened by Raúl Leoni , the then incumbent president.

Between 2006 and 2013 the bridge was completely overhauled in three stages.
