The Herder-Gymnasium is setting up a 5th grade in the mathematical and scientific profile from the 2005/2006 school year as part of a school experiment to promote gifted students . Since the 2013/2014 school year, a second profile train has been offered from the 5th grade.

history

Herder Oberschule view of Westendallee

In 1903, the Herder High School as reform was grammar school founded in Guerickestraße. It was an all boys school. In 1909 it was moved to a new building in Bayernallee, on the site of today's Heinz-Berggruen-Gymnasium . The schoolhouse survived the bombing raids of the war largely unscathed, but it burned down completely on May 11, 1945 for a cause that has not yet been clearly established. The counterpart to the Herder Gymnasium was the Westend School, founded in 1912, which was reserved for girls. This grammar school with then 800 students existed in Leistikowstraße and in 1929 moved into the buildings that surround the school today. During the Second World War , the Westend School served as a military hospital, and after the end of the war as a hospital until 1952. It was not until the Berlin School Act of the same year, which provided for common lessons for boys and girls, that the two schools were merged to form the Herder Oberschule.

facts and figures

The school had 763 students in the 2011/2012 school year. From grade 7 onwards, the grammar school has four classes, with two classes in each grade having a mathematical and scientific profile and a different timetable. Two of these classes attend the school from the 5th grade instead of the 7th grade, as is usual in Berlin. The first 5th grade was set up in 2005, from the 2013/14 school year this branch will be operated in two classes.

More than 90% of the students take part in religious instruction, which at Herder-Gymnasium strongly cooperates with the compulsory subject ethics . Several trips take place every year, such as student exchanges with a partner school in Taipei and one in Bordeaux , music trips, seminar trips and Auschwitz commemorative trips .

Herder-Gymnasium has been using the block timetable since the 2013/2014 school year.

From the 2013/2014 school year, two prominent fifth grades will start school again. In the 2014/2015 school year there is no new core class in grade seven. This means that grade seven consists of two distinct classes (one new and one that has been with us since the fifth).

The school participates in the Berlin program for in-depth professional orientation (BvBO) and offers its students support in professional orientation and career choice.

German chess school

The school's chess working group is one of the largest and most powerful in Berlin. For the long and successful work of this working group, the school was awarded the German Chess School seal of quality in the summer of 2007 as the second school in Germany by the German Chess Federation .
