The Hergest Ridge is a mountain on the border between England and Wales, on the edge of the Welsh Marches .
Location and surroundings
The greater part and also the summit are on the English side in Herefordshire , the smaller part on the Welsh side in Powys . Nearby mountains are Bradnor Hill in the northeast and Gwaunceste Hill in the west. The Arrow River flows along the southeast side of Hergest Ridge . The Arrow is also the closest town, Kington.
During the Second World War, the Hergest Ridge was farmed. Today, as before, it is grassy and partly boggy . In some areas, a large area is growing bracken .
Touristic
The long-distance hiking trail leads along Offa's Dyke Path over Hergest Ridge , but not over the summit . At the foot of Hergest Ridge which is landscaped Hergest Croft Gardens .
Relationship with Mike Oldfield
Mike Oldfield lived for a few years in a house called The Beacon at the foot of Hergest Ridge . Here he wrote the music album of the same name and also the following album " Ommadawn ", which was largely recorded here, and in which Hergest Ridge is mentioned in the piece On Horseback . The Hergest Ridge area has become a popular destination for Oldfield's fan base. The Beacon is now an inn.
