Herman Conway (born October 11, 1908 in Gainsborough , † April 1983 ) was an English football goalkeeper .

Career

Conway began his career in his hometown at Gainsborough Trinity in the Midland League and moved in 1930 on the recommendation of longtime Burnley goalkeeper Jerry Dawson to straight into the Second Division relegated Burnley . After 81 missions in four years, he was committed in 1934 by league rivals West Ham United . There he completed 41 league games for the East London club in the 1934/35 season, when they missed promotion only because of the poorer goal quotient against the Bolton Wanderers. After a total of 122 league games for West Ham, the outbreak of World War II ended Conway's professional career.

Until 1941 he continued to play in the regional Wartime League for West Ham, in 1940 he won the League War Cup in front of 42,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium with a 1-0 win over Blackburn Rovers . A short time later, Conway began his military service in a supply warehouse in Accrington . In addition, he played between 1941 and 1945 for the nearby Blackburn Rovers team in over 130 Wartime games. After the war, Conway returned to London and worked in the construction industry. Residing in Chadwell Heath , he and his wife regularly attended West Ham home games until his death in 1983.
