Herman Garman Schanche (born September 7, 1828 in Bergen , Norway , † December 21, 1884 in Düsseldorf ) was a Norwegian landscape painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Schanche, son of the businessman Herman Garman Schanche (1781–1861) and his wife Cecilie Catharina, née Garman (1785–1823, also Garmann ), went to the public drawing school in Bergens (Bergens Thekniske Skole) , where Franz Wilhelm Schiertz was his teacher. After making the decision to become a painter, he traveled to Düsseldorf . From 1855 he was a private student of his compatriot Hans Fredrik Gude . He took up his residence in Düsseldorf, but traveled a lot in Europe, for example to England, Holland, France and Portugal, and often to his home country Norway. In the beginning Schanche also painted interior motifs, but primarily landscapes, later often coastal motifs in moonlight. He participated in international art exhibitions. He received a diploma at the London Art Exhibition in 1868, and the World Exhibition in Vienna in 1873 honored him with a medal.
