Herman Niger (* around 1550 in Braunschweig ; †?) Was a German lawyer , professor at the University of Helmstedt and Chancellor and advisor to the County of Oldenburg .

Live and act

Herman Niger, the son of the Braunschweig physician Antonius Niger , studied law from 1568 (?) , First in Leipzig and then from 1570 in Marburg. On October 15, 1576 he received his doctorate in law there . In the following years he probably continued his studies in Cologne , Strasbourg and Italy .

In December 1578, on the recommendation of Johannes Borcholt, he was offered a chair at the law faculty of the University of Helmstedt . In 1579 he was appointed professor there. In 1581/82 he became vice rector of the university and in 1586 as successor to Johann Jagemann legal scholar of the consistory .

After ten years, Niger gave up the academic career and in 1589 switched to practical work as the city counsel of Halle. He then briefly became Chancellor of the Diocese of Verden . In the same function, he moved to the Chancellery of the County of Oldenburg at Easter 1595, which also served as the Supreme Court and as a political advisory body to Count Johann VII of Oldenburg . Accordingly, Niger acted as a professional civil servant in a leading position in the administration and in the judiciary both in the enforcement of Roman law and as an advisor to the sovereign in political matters.

Presumably in 1601 he resigned from the Chancellery and left Oldenburg , but was still used as an advisor and expert in legal disputes in the city of Oldenburg, for example in litigation with East Frisia .

From 1602 to 1604 Niger was Syndicus in his hometown of Braunschweig. Later he went to Magdeburg.

Niger enjoyed contemporary prestige as a successful legal practitioner who had already prepared legal opinions for court cases during his university teaching days in Helmstedt. He was married since September 20, 1579 to Eva Musaeus (* 1556 in Breslau, † 1611 in Magdeburg), a daughter of the Protestant theologian Simon Musaeus .
