Folignan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Folignan is a white wine variety , a new breed between the Ugni Blanc x Folle Blanche varieties . The crossing took place in 1965 at INRA Bordeaux ( Institut National de la Recherche en Agronomie ) Sud-Ouest in southwest France.

The specified breeding goal was to develop an early-ripening grape variety for the Cognac growing area that is more disease-resistant than the widespread Ugni Blanc. The first field tests were carried out from 1975, which finally led to entry in the list of varieties after 20 years . Folignan is authorized in the regional wines of the Charente, Dordogne, Gers, Gironde, Landes and Lot regions. However, the dry white wines of this variety lack structure and substance. However, the distillation of the base wine produces good brandies. Since September 2005, the grape variety has been one of the varieties that are permitted to produce cognac .

The brandy is described as somewhat more aromatic compared to the brandy made from Ugni Blanc, as the proportion of methanol and terpenes is slightly higher.

Clone 1053 is approved for commercial cultivation in France .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The leaves are five-lobed and clearly indented (see also the article leaf shape ). The blade is bluntly serrated. The leaf surface (also called the leaf blade) is blistered and rough.
  • The cylindrical grape is medium-sized and more or less dense. The round berries are medium-sized and golden yellow in color when fully ripe.

The variety sprouts medium late and thus avoids late spring frosts. It ripens about 25 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen late. Folignan is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
