Folle Blanche

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Folle Blanche is a white wine variety . It used to be widespread in France on the Atlantic coast. It is a very old variety from the Charente .

Before the phylloxera infestation , the variety was mainly used as an acidic base wine for the distillation of cognac and the clone Picpoule for the Armagnac and is still considered the most suitable variety for making brandy. This variety has now lost its leading position as the main grape for cognac (vineyards today approx. 300 hectares ) to the Ugni Blanc grape variety , as the yield of Folle Blanche is significantly lower and it is also more susceptible to disease. A study published in 2007 shows that the Folle Blanche grape variety is genetically related to the Blanc Dame grape variety .

Most of the vineyards planted with her are located on the Loire in the vicinity of Nantes (in 2007, 1,848 hectares of vineyards were raised in France). Here the acidic variety is also called Gros Plant and the popular wine is marketed under the Denomination of Origin Gros Plant du Pays Nantais . The best clones are numbers 281, 280, 559 and 563.
