Charles Herman Pritchett

Charles Herman Pritchett (born February 9, 1907 in Latham , Illinois , † April 28, 1995 in Santa Barbara , California ) was an American political scientist . He was considered an expert on American constitutional law and a pioneer of a behavioral approach in political science, particularly in the analysis of decisions of the Supreme Court of the United States (Supreme Court) .

Life

Pritchett earned a bachelor's degree from Millikin University in 1927 and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1937 - delayed by an illness with tuberculosis . He then worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority , the Social Science Research Council and the US Department of Labor before joining the faculty of the University of Chicago in 1940 after a year of research in England . From 1948 to 1955 and from 1958 to 1964 he was chairman of the local political science department. Visiting professorships took him to Makerere University ( Uganda ) in 1963 and to Stanford University in 1966 . In 1966 he retired , but moved to the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1970 , where he taught until 1974.

Pritchet was 1963/64 President of the American Political Science Association , which since 1991 a C. Herman Pritchett Award for the best political science book on law and jurisdiction. In 1988 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

C. Herman Pritchett was married to Marguerite Lentler Pritchett (1906-1998). Their common grave is in the Santa Barbara Cemetery .
