Herman van den Bergh

Herman van den Bergh (born January 30, 1897 in Amsterdam , † August 1, 1967 in Rome ) was a Dutch poet, journalist, Romanist and Italianist .

life and work

Van den Bergh studied law in Amsterdam and graduated in 1919. After a time as a violinist, he became a foreign correspondent for the daily De Telegraaf , primarily in Rome and Paris, but also in Southeastern Europe, Asia Minor and North Africa.

In the period between the two world wars, Bergh was influential in the literary avant-garde in the Netherlands, including editor of the magazine Het Getij .

After the Second World War he switched to science and received his doctorate in Italian language from the University of Utrecht in 1951 with the work Giambattista Casti . Abbé galant, poète et politicien (1724-1803) (Amsterdam 1951). He was then a private lecturer in Italian at the University of Amsterdam from 1952 to 1960 , had a teaching post from 1960 to 1962 and was lecturer (lecturer) in Italian literature from 1962 until his death.
