Hermann-Josef Rupieper

Hermann-Josef Rupieper (born February 23, 1942 in Recklinghausen , † August 31, 2004 in Crete ) was a German historian .

Life

Rupieper studied history, English and political science at the Free University of Berlin and received his doctorate in 1974 in Stanford (California). In 1981 he completed his habilitation at the Free University of Berlin. In 1987 he was the first managing director of the German Historical Institute in Washington . In 1987 he was appointed to a professorship for modern history at the Philipps University of Marburg . In 1993 he took over the professorship for contemporary history at the newly founded Institute for History at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg .

Rupieper conducted research on topics related to American, European and German history in the 19th and 20th centuries. He was the editor of various studies on regional and university history.
