Location of Röchlinghöhe in Saarland

The Röchlinghöhe , Bouser Höhe until 1956 and Hermann-Röchling-Höhe until 2013 , is a district of Völklingen in the Saarland regional association Saarbrücken .

Surname

The renaming of the district from Bouser Höhe to Hermann-Röchling-Höhe after the NS- Wehrwirtschaftsführer , war criminal and industrialist Hermann Röchling took place in 1956. In the session of August 13, 1956 the Völklingen city council decided to rename it to the Saarland government, Ministry of the Inside, with effect from August 24, 1956, the first anniversary of Hermann Röchling's death, to be requested.

The Hermann-Röchling-Höhe became known to a wider public in 2000 through criticism of the naming in an ARD television report. Röchling was involved in the organization of forced labor during National Socialism . For this reason, among other things, he was sentenced as a war criminal after the Second World War . Against this background, calls were repeatedly made to rename the district. First there was a citizens' initiative that preferred the old name Bouser Höhe . At the beginning of 2012, the Left Party spoke out in favor of undertaking a concrete renaming. The SPD joined in mid-2012. The Left took the side of the citizens' movement with regard to the name, but would also agree with the Völklinger Höhe alternative . The SPD preferred Auf der Höhe as the future name, but would also have agreed to let the citizens choose a new name themselves. As a reaction to this, a citizens' initiative was founded that vehemently advocated keeping the name. She relied on the opinion of the residents, who “an estimated 95% would reject a renaming”. The initiative for the renaming responded that because of Röchling's support in the construction of their houses, the residents had an overly one-sided and prejudiced positive image of him that systematically ignored his Nazi background. Exceptionally, therefore, they should not be left to decide for themselves in this matter.

On January 31, 2013, the Völklingen city council decided with the votes of the SPD, CDU and FDP and against the opposition of the left, the NPD and the Pro Völklingen group (with the abstention of the Free Voters and the Greens) to rename the district to Röchlinghöhe .

history

In 1937, the entrepreneur from the Völklingen ironworks tied his employees to his plant with financial aid to build their own homes. The workers built the two-story houses with a garden mainly in self-help after the shifts in the company. In 1939 there were already 128 buildings. Due to the Second World War, further expansion of the settlement stalled and was only resumed afterwards.

Infrastructure

There is a primary school and a kindergarten. The Röchlinghöhe is surrounded by the Völklingen city forest. Many older people live there, but in recent years more and more younger families have moved to the district.

catholic church St. Konrad

There is a Catholic Church, the St. Konrad Church. Its foundation stone was laid in 1953 and it was inaugurated in 1955. The emergency church, which was set up in a wooden barracks from 1945 to 1947 and was also named after Konrad von Parzham , was previously in use.

The Protestant Church, part of the Völklingen Reconciliation Church, was closed in 2011. Its foundation stone was laid in 1979 and it was inaugurated in 1980. Protestant services had already taken place in the primary school beforehand. The last service took place on January 29, 2011, when around 240 parishioners lived in the district.
