The Hermann Schaff school in Homberg , North Hesse , is a school for the hearing impaired and visually impaired with a department for learning assistance as a special educational advisory and support center. You can do compulsory schooling there from the 4th year of life (pre-class) up to the secondary school leaving certificate. The school is named after the theologian and deaf-mute chaplain Hermann Schektiven .

School life

The class size is up to ten students. There are teachers specially trained for students with hearing impairments at this school facility. This school is particularly suitable for children with hearing impairments (up to deafness ) from the area, because the students are brought there by school buses or can also live there in the connected boarding school . The timetable in the tenth grade for the Realschule is eight hours of lessons almost every day, with the exception of Friday with only six hours because of the drive home. After class, the students can go to their assigned after-school care center to study and eat. At the school, most of the students are taught in spoken language, but the students who need or want this are also taught in German Sign Language (DGS) or with spoken language-accompanying signs (LBG).

The school was included in the Hessian state program “All-day school made to measure” and has been a full-day school since August 2006. This means that all students stay in school for at least three days until the afternoon. Since September 2006, visually impaired pupils have also been trained in a separate school branch at the Hermann Schektiven school. In September 2011, the school's own concept to support students in vocational orientation was awarded a seal of approval by the Hessian Ministry of Culture.
