Hermann Arnold von Wachtendonk succeeded his father in the service of the Palatinate rulers. Since 1719 he was a member of the Klevischen, from 1723 also of the Jülich knighthood . He became a Real Privy Councilor , acted as a diplomat and in 1743, under Elector Karl Theodor , he advanced to the position of Chamberlain, one of the highest court officials. In addition, he carried the title of Burgrave of Alzey. Soon afterwards he rose to the position of first minister in the Electorate of the Palatinate and state steward or governor in the Duchy of Jülich-Berg . He headed all offices from Mannheim . Wachtendonk led the Palatinate's foreign policy, was considered pro-French and tried to keep the country out of all conflicts through the greatest possible neutrality. In his heyday he was considered the undisputed foreign policy leader, towards the end of his term in office he was progressively disempowered.

Hermann Arnold von Wachtendonk was a knight of the Order of Hubert . With him his family died out in the male line.

His brother Johann Edmund († 1759) lived as a canon in Münster .

He also had three sisters, one of whom married Johann Adolph Alexander von Loë (1687–1743) and the other to the Palatinate Baron Ludwig Anton von Hacke (1682–1752). The third married the nobleman Alexander Adolf von Blanckart and lived with him at Alsdorf Castle near Aachen .
