Hermann Bauer Publishing House

The Hermann Bauer Verlag was a German esoteric publishing house based in Freiburg im Breisgau . The Esotera magazine published by the publisher was one of the most famous publications in the field of esotericism and spirituality and had a circulation of 30,000 copies. The publishing house founded in 1937 developed into one of the most important esoteric publishers in Germany in the post-war period. The program focused on naturopathy , astrology and yoga .

The Spiegel publishing house was founded on May 10, 1937 by Hermann Bauer. During the period of National Socialism , the company was shut down several times. The end came in November 1944 when the publishing house was bombed out. B 1946 began with the reconstruction. In 1951 Friedrich Kirner, Bauer's son-in-law, joined the company and in 1966 the sole proprietorship was converted into a KG, which from then on operated as Verlag Hermann Bauer KG .

1970 Hermann Bauer bought the John Tree Publishing , which also Prana House , a reform of life - mail order companies and publishing, as well as the magazine The white flag belonged. As an organ of the Neugeist movement , the white flag had a circulation of 450,000 copies in the 1930s. In 1958 the magazine The Occult Voice was bought and continued under the title The Other World . Now these magazines have been combined to form the new Esotera magazine .

At the end of the 1990s, the publishing house had 80 employees who shared in the profits through profit participation certificates . At that time, in addition to the Esotera magazine and the Prana mail-order company, the company also owned Bauer-Audio / Video Verlag and Ebertin Verlag , where the astrological magazine Meridian had been published from 1979 .

Then the company ran into difficulties, partly due to the increasing commitment of public publishers such as Goldmann and Droemer Knaur , who pushed into the esoteric segment with their own ranks and imprints ( Goldmann Arkana and Droemer Knaur Esoterik ). The long-time owners and managing directors Friedrich Kirner and Waltraud Kirner, the daughter of the company founder, sold the majority stake in 1999 to the Düsseldorf PR entrepreneur Paul J. Kohtes, who tried to relaunch the publisher and the Esotera magazine . Erwin Singer, previously at the Swiss Urania publishing house (Neuhausen am Rheinfall), became the new managing director. The project failed and in 2001 the publisher had to file for bankruptcy, but the process failed due to insufficient assets . Subsequent processes continued until 2006. The magazine Esotera was sold to a company from Berlin, where she appeared a few years irregular. The mail order company PranaHaus was taken over and continued.
