Hermann Breymann (Romanist)

Bodo Hermann Wilhelm Breymann (born July 3, 1842 in Oker (Goslar) , † September 6, 1910 in Bad Reichenhall ) was a German Romanist .

life and work

Breymann, the son of a smelter, studied at the universities of Paris and Bonn . He received his doctorate in Göttingen in 1868 with Theodor Müller with Introduction aux deux livres des Machabées, traduction française du XIIIe siècle (in the foreword he thanks Ludwig Lemcke , whom he knew from Braunschweig). Then he went to England. There he worked as a tutor until he got a position as associate professor at Owens College in Manchester .

Breymann became double professor for French and English (New English and New French; alongside Konrad Hofmann, who was responsible for the old language stages) in Munich in 1875 , and from 1892 became the first Munich professor for Romance philology. He also became a member of the Royal Bavarian Supreme School Council. In 1876 he founded the Academic New Philological Association (ANV). Breymann was appointed Privy Councilor. In 1911 he was followed by Karl Vossler at the chair .
