Hermann Eichfeld (born February 27, 1845 in Karlsruhe , † August 26, 1917 in Mannheim ) was a German landscape painter . He was a professor and director of the Grand Ducal Picture Gallery in Mannheim.

Life

Hermann Eichfeld was born as the son of the businessman Carl Joseph Eichfeld, the first war minister of the Baden revolutionary government . After the crushed revolution, the family lived in Antwerp , where Eichfeld met Anselm Feuerbach , Ludwig Kachel the Younger, Karl Roux and other artists who were at the family home while attending the Antwerp Art Academy, which was then headed by Gustave Wappers Eichfeld frequented. At the age of twelve he already attended the Classical Classical Hall of this academy as an art enthusiast.

His professional career, however, initially developed differently. In 1864 he went to study engineering at the Zurich Polytechnic , where he joined the Corps Rhenania . After Rhenania's suspension in March 1865, he must have left Zurich immediately and entered military service in Baden. He took part in the war against France in 1870/71 as an officer , was wounded and awarded the Iron Cross II. Class and the Order of Frederick .

In 1873 he quit his officer service and studied at the Stuttgart Art Academy and under Joseph Wenglein at the Munich Art Academy . He was a co-founder and later a committee member of the Munich Secession . He was active literary in well-known art magazines of his time. In 1909 Eichfeld received the gold medal of the Munich Secession. In 1912 he was appointed professor and director of the Grand Ducal Picture Gallery in Mannheim. On the occasion of his 70th birthday, the Mannheimer Kunstverein organized an exhibition of studies and sketches by Eichfeld.

Hermann Eichfeld was a member of the German Association of Artists .

Eichfeld's landscapes are characterized by “an elegant, subdued, intimate, harmonious tone”. They are “simple and plain in their fine mood”. In his natural style, "elements of form and color, together with the mood evoked by considering nature, are the constructive and effective style elements".
