Hermann Willy Fehr (born June 30, 1941 in Basel ) is a Swiss politician ( SP ) who was active until 1997.

Political career

After completing his studies at the HSG St. Gallen, Hermann Fehr moved to Biel in 1966 . Here he rose rapidly in the political hierarchy. From 1971 he was a member of the city council (parliament). In 1972 he became a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Bern and remained so until his election to the National Council in October 1983. In autumn 1973, Fehr was elected to the municipal council (government) of Biel as the successor to the fatally injured Walter Gurtner until the end of 1976 the function of building director. In November 1976 he was elected the fourth social democratic city ​​president of Biel. He held this position until May 31, 1990. During his term of office there was a major structural crisis in the watch industry, which at that time cost many jobs in the city of Biel; For this reason, Fehr launched the city's economic development agency as early as 1977, in his first year in office as city president. In parallel to the office of city president, he was elected to the National Council in October 1983, to which he was appointed until the end of May 1990. Work after the end of the political career

After the end of his political career, he worked as the central president of the Swiss Samaritan Association and as a member of the council of the Swiss Red Cross . In the latter function, he was instrumental in the fact that the then central laboratory of the Red Cross was sold to the Australian CSL Behring and not to Novartis ; This decision, which was not undisputed at the time, had a positive effect on the Canton of Bern as a business location, because since then CSL Behring has invested heavily (> CHF 1 billion) in the Bern and Lengnau locations, also in the Canton of Bern.

Family / origin

His father Hermann Fehr was mayor of the SP from 1961 to 1975 in Ermatingen TG and was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Thurgau for eight years. His son Erich Fehr has also been mayor of Biel / Bienne since 2011 . His cousin, Hans-Jürg Fehr (* 1948), was a member of the Schaffhausen National Council and President of the SP Switzerland.
