Hermann Gelhaus

Hermann Gelhaus (born October 31, 1938 in Bösel ) is a German Germanist and linguist .

Live and act

Hermann Gelhaus graduated from high school in Cloppenburg in 1959 . He then studied theology , Latin and German in Münster , Freiburg and Basel , where he received his doctorate in 1964 . The habilitation took place in 1971, also in Basel. He worked as a research assistant in Mannheim and Basel. Since 1972 he was a professor at the University of Trier .

His academic focus is on the grammar of the German standard language, history of the German language, pragmatics and communication. In 1984 he made a contribution to the German part-of-speech grammar as part of the Duden grammar. Among other things, he researched the "modal infinitive" and syntax in sentence structure. He also dealt with Martin Luther's translation of the Bible . In this context, he proved that the author Friedrich Traub is identical to Friedrich Staphylus .

Gelhaus has been married since 1969, has two daughters and now lives in his home town of Bösel.
