Hermann II. Wesel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann II. Wesel († June 1563 in Russia ) was a German clergyman in Livonia and Prince-Bishop of Tartu (German Dorpat ).

Hermann probably came from the city of Wesel on the Lower Rhine and possibly carried the name Hermann Weiland . His father is said to have been a hat maker.

He became abbot of the Cistercian monastery Kärkna (German Falkenau ) in Livonia. On October 17, 1552, he was elected cathedral chapter of the diocese of Dorpat as Hermann II. To the Prince Bishop . On June 25, 1554, the election was confirmed by the Pope. At the same time he remained head of the Kärkna monastery.

In 1558 the Livonian War (1558–1583) broke out over the region. Already at the beginning of the war the diocese of Dorpat and later the small states of Livonia were almost completely destroyed by Russian troops. Dorpat capitulated on July 18, 1558.

The new Russian rulers left Hermann II. Wesel, the last Catholic bishop of Dorpat, alive. He was initially allowed to retire to Kärkna for a few weeks . Russian troops deported him to the interior of Russia on August 23, 1558, where he died in 1563.
