Hermann Jerz

Hermann Jerz (born July 21, 1935 in Ulm ) is a German geologist . In addition to his full-time work at the Bavarian State Geological Office (1964–2000), he was honorary professor at the University of Augsburg (1977–2004).

Live and act

Hermann Jerz studied geology up to the preliminary diploma at the Ludwig Maximilians University Munich (LMU Munich) and then switched to the Technical University of Munich (TU Munich). In 1961 he completed his studies there and then worked in the oil-natural gas department of Preussag AG . In 1961 Jerz received his doctorate at the Technical University of Munich at the Chair of General Geology and Alpine Geology. In 1964 he entered the service of the Bavarian Geological Survey (now part of the Bavarian State Office for the Environment ), first in the field of Soil Science Landesaufnahme , later in the field of geological mapping, and was most recently until his retirement in 2000 as a government official involved. There he carried out mappings that appeared as soil and geological map sheets along with explanatory volumes.

Between 1977 and 2004 Jerz was a lecturer at the Chair for Physical Geography and Quantitative Methods at the Institute for Geography at the University of Augsburg; In 1993 he was awarded the title of honorary professor by the University of Augsburg. There he was also responsible for the sole representation of the subject geology as a minor in the diploma course. His research was in the areas of ice age research, climate and glacier research, stratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy, geomorphology, soil science and landscape history. As a long-time director of the Society for Bavarian Regional Studies, he also published on the history of the country. From 1981 to 1987 he was secretary of the German sub-commission for quaternary stratigraphy and from 1982 to 1991 secretary of the INQUA sub-commission for European quaternary stratigraphy (SEQS).
