Hermann Kaserer
Hermann Kaserer (born April 6, 1877 in Vienna , † October 21, 1955 in Straß (Lower Austria)) was an Austrian crop scientist and oenologist.
Live and act
Hermann Kaserer studied chemistry at the University of Vienna , received his doctorate there in 1901 and then worked in various agricultural research stations. In 1903 he became an assistant at the chair for agricultural crop production at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna. In 1906 he completed his habilitation with a thesis in the field of agricultural bacteriology. With research into the effectiveness of new fertilizers, he also acquired the Venia legendi for the subject of crop production in 1910. In 1912 he was appointed associate professor. 1917 received a teaching position for viticulture. From 1922 to 1945 he was chairman of the chair for agricultural crop production at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna and at the same time head of the Groß-Enzersdorf experimental farm.
The main focus of his research activities were studies of soil cultivation, crop rotation, mineral fertilization, manure preparation, root growth and germination physiology. From 1926 to 1933 he was editor and co-editor of the magazine "Progress in Agriculture". His scientific work was characterized by its practical relevance. Bringing crop cultivation knowledge directly to the farmer was a particular concern of his. His "Leaflets for the Simple Farmer" and a large number of small papers published by him served this goal.
Kaserer's particular love was viticulture. He brought his own winery, on which he carried out extensive experiments, to a high reputation. For many years he was chairman of the main association of winegrowers in Austria. He was awarded the Babo Medal for his services in the field of viticulture. In 1939 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
