Hermann Leskien

Hermann Adalbert Leskien (born December 23, 1939 in Königsberg ) is a German librarian . From 1992 to 2004 he was Director General of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek .

Life

After graduating from high school in Aschaffenburg and studying German, geography and history at the University of Würzburg, Hermann Leskien decided to train as a librarian with a degree in teaching and a doctorate.

After starting out as an acquisition assistant at the University Library of Würzburg , he built the library of what was then the University of Bamberg as founding director from 1973 onwards . 1979 Leskien became director of the Munich University Library . He was particularly involved in the working group set up by the State Ministry in 1990, which developed recommendations for a far-reaching structural and financial improvement in the supply of literature to students.

In 1992 Hermann Leskien took over the management of the Bavarian State Library. A further expansion of his activities in 1999 brought the integration of the tasks of the General Directorate of the Bavarian State Libraries into the Bavarian State Library, which from then on was directly subordinate to the State Ministry. Leskien was appointed General Director of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek at the same time.

On July 16, 2004, Leskien was handed over to his successor Rolf Griebel .

In 2007 he received the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class
