Gustav Hofmann (librarian)

Gustav August Wilhelm Hofmann (born February 14, 1900 in Munich ; † July 6, 1982 there ) was a German librarian .

Life

Gustav Hofmann, son of Senior Medical Officer Dr. med. Wilhelm Hofmann and Maria, born Kahr, students and high school graduate at the Maximiliansgymnasium in Munich, then turned to studying German history , English and pedagogy at the University of Munich , which he obtained in 1930 with the academic degree of Dr. phil. completed.

After taking the specialist library examination in 1927, he took up a position at the Palatinate State Library in Speyer in 1930 , moved to the Bavarian State Library in 1935 , where he was appointed director in 1947 and general director the following year ; he retired in 1966. In addition, Gustav Hofmann held the office of President of the International Association of Librarians from 1958 to 1963 .

Gustav Hofmann, who was co-editor of the Zeitschrift für Bibliothekswesen und Bibliographie from 1954 to 1964 , was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit in 1959 , and in 1962 he was awarded the Officier des Palmes Académiques .

Gustav Hofmann married Clementine nee Rau in 1930, with whom he had a son. He died in Munich in 1982 at the age of 83.
