Rolf Griebel

Rolf-Eberhard Griebel (born September 15, 1949 in Ansbach ) is a German librarian. From 2004 to 2014 he was Director General of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich.

Career

Griebel passed his A-levels at the Platen grammar school in Ansbach and studied history, German and social sciences at the University of Würzburg . During this time he was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation . After the state examination for teaching at grammar schools (1973) and the doctorate to Dr. phil. (1978), he graduated from the University Library of Regensburg and the Bavarian Library School , the Munich Library clerkship .

After passing the assessor exam (1980), Griebel worked as a director and specialist assistant at the Bamberg University Library until 1987 , before moving to the Erlangen-Nürnberg University Library as head of the acquisitions department and deputy director . After the fall of the Wall, Griebel was actively involved in the German-German libraries expert group and in the federal-state working group on librarianship in rebuilding academic librarianship in the new federal states. In 1994 he came to the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek as head of the main acquisitions department .

In 2000 he was appointed deputy general director and in 2004 general director of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. Under his leadership (2004–2014) the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek has sustainably expanded its position as one of the leading international research libraries in diverse partnerships with science and has developed into an innovation center for digital information technology. A crucial milestone was the conclusion of the public-private partnership with Google (2007). In 2008 the Bavarian State Library was named Library of the Year .

In 2011 Griebel received the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany

Griebel's successor and previous Deputy General Director Klaus Ceynowa took up his post on April 1, 2015.
