The Platen-Gymnasium is a state high school with a scientific, technological and linguistic branch in the Central Franconian district capital Ansbach .

history

Foundation of a community school

The beginnings of the Platen grammar school go back to the year 1808, when a two-class secondary school was built in Ansbach , which was housed in a single room of the Carolinum grammar school . According to a royal rescript from 1816, the secondary school, threatened in its existence because of the low number of pupils, was converted into a higher middle school. The curriculum included classes in subjects such as math, science / physics, drawing / writing, French and Latin. The best-known student of this community school was the Ansbach children's song writer Friedrich Güll .

Trade school

The conversion into a two-tier agricultural and trade school in 1833 happened in view of the beginning of industrialization . The vocational school, which placed the emphasis of the training on practice rather than on theoretical areas, moved into new classrooms in what is now Platenstrasse 18, where initially 55 students were taught by three teachers. In 1849, the trade school was to be expanded into a three-class facility. Because of the increased space requirement, the search for a new school building was made. The choice fell on the Zocha-Schlößchen , built in the 18th century , which the city acquired for around 18,000 guilders. After renovation work for the school, the move to the city palace at today's Bahnhofsplatz followed in 1851, where the Platen grammar school is still located today.

Establishment of the secondary school

In 1877 the three-class trade school became a six-level secondary school. This year is now considered the official founding year of the Platen Gymnasium. Between 1926 and 1929 the school was supplemented by three further grades and at the beginning of the school year 1927/28 it was elevated to the Oberrealschule Ansbach (ORA), which led to the Abitur after nine years of training . In 1929 the first class of the upper secondary school passed their Abitur examination. In the same year, an additional building was inaugurated after only a year of construction to accommodate the new year classes of the upper secondary school.

Bombing and Post War

In the course of Operation Clarion , large parts of the school were destroyed in an air raid by the United States Army Air Forces on the neighboring Ansbach train station on February 23, 1945 . The pupils and teachers did not die in the process, however, as classes were canceled as a precaution after a failed attack the day before.

Only about two thirds of the new building (today's A building) and the southeast corner of the Zocha-Schlößchen could be rebuilt by the end of the 1940s. Until a reasonably normal school operation was possible again after makeshift reconstruction work, the students were temporarily distributed to the Carolinum grammar school and the then Theresien-Oberrealschule . After the renovation / reconstruction and the construction of annexes that no longer exist, the first post-war building that still exists today, today's B-building, was put into operation in 1959.

From the renaming until today

Due to the Hamburg Agreement , the secondary school was to be given a new name in 1965. When it came to choosing a possible namesake for the school, they were initially very divided. Hardenberg , Ritter von Lang , Anselm Feuerbach and August von Platen were considered conceivable . At the endeavor of the then headmaster Fritz Rosenbauer, the school was finally named after the poet August Graf von Platen, who was born in Ansbach . Since all schools leading to the general higher education entrance qualification had to be called "Gymnasium" in Bavaria, the Oberrealschule Ansbach became the Platen-Gymnasium. At the end of the 1960s, the grammar school, until then a school for boys only, was also open to girls.

In the following years, due to the increasing number of students, several extensions and conversions were necessary. In addition to the old school building (A and B building), the C building, the D building, the break hall and the cafeteria were built in chronological order.

Today the school consists of six buildings with over 30 classrooms and course rooms, 16 specialist rooms, a multimedia room, a photo laboratory, a microscope room, one of the largest central school libraries in Bavaria, a double gym and an outdoor sports facility in the neighboring courtyard garden .

In 1999, Elisabeth Fuchshuber-Weiß became the first woman to take over the management of the Platen-Gymnasium.

The Platen-Gymnasium has been a seminar school for chemistry , German , English , history and geography since 2009 . It is the only grammar school in West Central Franconia with seminars. For the 2015/16 school year, an open all-day school was set up for the first time .

Branches and choices

Branches of the Platen High School

English is taught as the first foreign language from the fifth grade onwards . In the sixth grade, students have the choice between Latin or French as a second foreign language.

If you choose French as your second foreign language, you have the choice between the scientific and technological branch with a focus on chemistry , physics and computer science or the linguistic branch with Italian as a third foreign language. Chemistry, physics and computer science take up a correspondingly smaller part of the weekly teaching time.

If you choose Latin as the second foreign language in the sixth grade , there is also the option of choosing between the scientific-technological and the linguistic branch at the beginning of the eighth grade , in which in this case French or Italian can be chosen as the third foreign language.

In addition, a number of electives and study groups are offered: including school games / theater , chess , school newspaper (“PlaBla”), robotics , instrumental lessons and some sports such as football or table tennis . There is also a lower / upper school choir, an orchestra and the “Platen Band”.

Activities and student exchanges

In addition to the usual excursions and seminar trips, one winter sports week each year in Wagrain , Austria, takes place for the seventh and eighth grade .

The Platen-Gymnasium also maintains regular student exchange programs with the following partner schools :
