Hermann Mevius (* 1820 in Breslau ; † May 20, 1864 in Düsseldorf ) was a German landscape and marine painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

From 1836 Mevius studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . From 1838 to 1840 he was a student in Johann Wilhelm Schirmer's landscape class there . After completing his studies, he stayed in Düsseldorf, from where he undertook study trips to the coasts of the Netherlands, France and Germany and where he was a member of the Malkasten artists' association from 1848 to 1854 . Like the slightly older Andreas Achenbach , Mevius tended to narrative and dramatic depictions of stormy scenes at sea. His painting Shipwreck on the Island of Capraja in the Ligurian Sea or Shipwreck on the Ligurian Coast was purchased on August 20, 1855 as the first work for the Upper Austrian State Gallery in Linz and in 1858 was given to the general exhibition in Munich.
