Hermann Nestel (born May 10, 1858 in Stuttgart , † 1905 in Bordighera ) was a German landscape painter, illustrator and draftsman who worked in Italy.

He began his artistic training at the Stuttgart Art School and continued it in Munich and at the Royal Prussian Academy of the Arts in Berlin with Karl Ludwig .

After completing his studies, Nestel went on a study trip to Italy .

In 1882 he was commissioned by the German publisher Wilhelm Spemann to depict the views of the Ligurian and French coasts from Nice to La Spezia . The drawings by Nestel were used to illustrate the book “The Riviera, hiking destinations and winter asylums from Nice to Spezia” by Woldemar Kaden.

In 1887 he decided to settle in Bordighera. There he got to know the botanist and landscape architect Ludwig Winter , with whom a collaboration began on the garden design of villas and parks. Soon, Nestel's daughter married Ludwig Winter's first-born son.

During his stay in Bordighera he continued to work with German publishers, in particular with the magazines “ Gartenlaube ” and “ Über Land und Meer ”. In Bordighera he remained active as a landscape painter. Nestel was friends with the group of local intellectuals and artists, such as Pompeo Mariani , Giuseppe Ferdinando Piana , Clarence Bicknell and Friederich von Kleudgen .

Nestel died at the age of 47 and was buried in the Bordighera cemetery. His works can be found in the Istituto Internazionale di Studi Liguri , among others .
