Ludwig Jonathan Winter (born August 9, 1846 in Heidelberg , † July 12, 1912 in Mannheim ) was a German botanist and garden architect who became known, among other things, for his involvement in the Hanbury Botanical Garden .

Life

Winter was born as the son of the bookseller Anton Winter and his wife, the painter Emilie Christiane Brönner. His family later moved to Leipzig , where he studied botany .

After working as a gardener in Erfurt for two years , he went to the gardening school in Potsdam , where he completed his botany studies and became head gardener at the Botanical Gardens of the University of Bonn . In 1867 he moved to Paris to take part in the World's Fair ; later he worked as head gardener in the gardens of the Tuileries .

When Thomas Hanbury began work on his botanical garden in 1869 , he won winter as a botany expert. Winter dedicated himself to this garden for five years, importing numerous different plants from Australia , New Zealand and California . After completing the work, Winter moved to Bordighera in 1874 , from where he worked together with Hermann Nestel on gardens and parks on the Ligurian Riviera .

In 1875 he founded an experimental nursery in Vallone del Sasso , where he grew rare tropical plants, including palms, lianas and ficus. The gardens he designed include those for Empress Eugénie on Cap Martin , Villa Zirio in San Remo , Villa Bischoffsheim in Bordighera and Borgo Storico Seghetti Panichi in Ascoli Piceno , v. a. but the Giardino di Madonna della Ruota between Bordighera and Ospedaletti .
