Live and act

Hermann Röver was the son of a hotelier from Hamburg. He studied art history at the University of Munich and the University of Hamburg . There he received his doctorate in 1926 under Erwin Panofsky . He then worked for the Hamburg monument conservator Richard Stettiner , who died in 1927. Röver then took over, initially on a provisional basis, his office as monument conservator and held it until 1934. He continued the main focus of Stettiner's work as far as possible, but no longer gave any written reports.

During his service time, the restoration of the main church Sankt Jacobi and the controversial overhaul of the organ there as well as work on other church structures such as the Dreieinigkeitskirche Allermöhe in 1930. When it came to redesigning the colors, Röver was less based on the existing historical building structure, but often selected designs by contemporary artists. During his service, Röver first recorded the inventory of technical cultural monuments in Hamburg.

Together with his colleague Ulrich Nabel, Röver planned a farmhouse museum. Röver preferred a facility in Curslack , while Nabel preferred an open-air museum in Hamburg's city park . In addition, he campaigned for an “old Hamburg community center” that was to be based on comparable buildings in Gdansk and Lübeck . The reason for Röver's concern was the upcoming construction work in downtown Hamburg. Röver hoped to be able to preserve part of the old bourgeois culture with the town house. His project aroused great public interest. A specially founded association acquired the house "Grimm 30", restored it and provided a historical interior. The building opened on December 12, 1932 and was destroyed during World War II.

During the Nazi era, several people denounced in 1933, including the sculptor Ludolf Albrecht , Hermann Röver, who had no experience in administrative tasks. On November 14, 1933, Röver was dismissed from service. In the following years he never worked again for the preservation of monuments. In his will he set up a "Foundation for Sport and Physical Training".
