Hermann Stechmann

Hermann Stechmann (born March 23, 1840 in Rügenwalde , Pomerania , † September 3, 1900 in Breslau ) was a German zoologist and director of the Breslau Zoological Garden .

Life

Stechmann studied medicine and zoology in Greifswald, where he joined the Corps Borussia . From May 15, 1882 until his death September 3, 1900 he was director of the Breslau Zoological Garden. Under Stechmann, the Breslau Zoological Garden developed rapidly, which made the zoo internationally known. The zoo has been enriched with many species. Stechmann had the bird house, a bear enclosure, the elephant house and the big cat enclosure built. The buildings have been preserved to this day and are still used for their original purpose. For the 25th anniversary of the zoo in 1890, the zoo guide published by Stechmann was published with a map and 48 photo views of the zoo and its animals. This was one of the first zoo guides in the world. When Stechmann died, the animal population comprised 1,800 animals and 650 species.
