Hermann Umpfenbach

Hermann Umpfenbach (born March 7, 1798 in Mainz , † March 16, 1862 in Gießen ) was a German mathematician .

Life

Umpfenbach studied mathematics in Giessen from 1817 and received his doctorate in 1819. In 1820 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer and became associate professor on January 9, 1823 and full professor of mathematics on November 25, 1825 at the University of Giessen . In 1838 he succeeded Georg Gottlieb Schmidt, who had died the year before, as full professor of mathematics. Umpfenbach also took over the management of the old Giessen observatory as well as the meteorological, mathematical, physical, technical and architectural cabinet from Schmidt. The physics and technology instrument collections soon passed to Heinrich Buff , the architectural collection to Hugo von Ritgen . Umpfenbach wrote several mathematics textbooks between 1821 and 1834. On December 26, 1858, he was appointed to the Secret Finance Council. He was married to Emilie Klotz (1805-1859), with whom he had three sons, including Karl Umpfenbach and Franz Umpfenbach .
