Hermann August Weizenegger (* 1963 in Kempten (Allgäu) ) is a German industrial designer . Since 2004 he has been professor for industrial design at the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences . He has been working independently since 1993, and has been running his own studio since 2009.

Career

After completing an apprenticeship as a textile retailer, Weizenegger studied industrial design with Hans Roericht at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1987 to 1992 . He then worked for a year as a freelancer at Roericht Product Development in Ulm . In 1993 he founded the Vogt and Weizenegger office in Berlin with Oliver Vogt . This is where the Sinterchair , which is represented in several collections, such as the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, the Neue Sammlung in Munich , the Marta Herford and the Palais Schönborn in Vienna was created. In 2018 the chair was also included in the collection of the Vitra Design Museum as a miniature. Another well-known project is the DIM - The Imaginary Manufactory, which they curated in collaboration with the Berlin asylum for the blind. Here new products were created with numerous designers such as Konstantin Grcic , Matali Crasset , Marti Guixé and Stephen Burks . The office dissolved after 16 years.

Weizenegger is one of the founding members of Designmai (2003–2007), the platform for Berlin design, in whose content orientation and organization he was significantly involved for five years. He is also co-founder of the German Design Graduates Initiative with Professor Ineke Hans ( UDK Berlin ) and Professor Mark Braun ( HBKsaar ) in 2019.

His atelier HAW is represented thematically with artistic projects in exhibitions, with Digital Couture (2009) in the Appel Design Gallery as well as in group exhibitions such as Vase vers Vases (2009) in the design gallery Helmrinderknecht in Berlin, Nullpunkt (2009) in Marta Herford, in the museum for applied arts Cologne in Cologne with Isn't it romantic? (2012). In addition to product design, Weizenegger also worked on interdisciplinary projects such as the robot performance Valse Automatique , which was performed in the MADE art space (2010).

One of Weizenegger's first public installations in the same year was the Felsenland project for the Berghain techno club in Berlin . He caused a stir and irritation with the Hotel Dresden project , in which he also worked in 2010 together with manufacturers on the reconstruction of an Art Nouveau inventory that was shown in the rooms of the Berlin art gallery Haubrokshows . In addition to the topic of narration, his studio work dealt with the question of sustainable and subversive series production, as in the case of the Strangeness of Seeing project , an extensive fashion collection for women and men. In 2013 the second narrative collection The Prince of Amundo was created , which includes cut crystal glass objects from the Theresienthal glass factory and silk carpets from Rug Star.

In summer 2015 he staged the exhibition The False Flower for the Dresden Museum of Applied Arts in Pillnitz Castle . In 2017, in collaboration with Sandra Pravica, he published the book Design Kosmos , a collection of his first ten projects.

In 2011, Weizenegger curated the Black Box prototype show at the Qubique trade fair in Berlin. He was also a member of the jury for the Design Recycling Prize and as a curator, among others, the Smart Future Mind Award, the city work of Vienna Designweek , the DMY Award 2014 and the I-love-Design-Award 2016. In 2018 he was a jury member at Handwerk + Form im Werkraum Bregenzerwald, Austria.

The glass results from Weizenegger's two-year collaboration with the Theresienthal glass manufacturer were awarded the 1st Prize for Applied Art 2013 for outstanding achievements on the subject of glass at the Zeughausmesse Berlin . Weizenegger was nominated for the Best of German Interior Design by the German Design Council in 2017 .

Atelier HAW has been working increasingly on series products for manufacturers since 2016. Numerous ceramic vessels, seating sets as well as bathroom furniture and wall tile collections were created here.
