Hermann da Fonseca-Wollheim began his military career on April 26, 1868 as a cadet in the Prussian Navy and completed his basic training on the sailing frigate SMS Gefion . As first officer on SMS Carola , he was involved in the military action during the uprising of the East African coastal population in 1889. Da Fonseca-Wollheim was later in command of the coastal armored ship SMS Hildebrand , then the training ship SMS Gneisenau . 1896–1899 he was in command of Cuxhaven.

From September 30, 1899 to April 30, 1900 and from May 21, 1900 to November 12, 1901, he was in command of the large cruiser SMS Vineta . He was then made available to the chief of the North Sea naval station until March 11, 1902 . With this date Fonseca-Wollheim since received the character as a Rear Admiral and was awarded simultaneously with the disposition made.

During his time as commandant of the Vineta, the Vineta provisional , an auxiliary postage stamp, was produced by the chief paymaster after consultation with him.
