Vineta provisional: Halved postage stamp with purple hand stamp overprint

The Vineta temporary was a temporary postage stamp that was issued from April 13, 1901 on the large cruiser SMS Vineta .

History of origin

Due to the lack of 3- pfennig stamps on board, the naval chief paymaster Carl Wegener halved the length of 300 5-pfennig stamps ( Michel No. 55) of the Germania series of the Reichspost . The 600 stamps that were created were provided with a purple 3PF hand stamp and used without any complaints.

The makeshift was used to send newspapers reporting on the celebration of the Emperor's birthday among Americans of German origin in New Orleans , to which the ship's crew had been invited, and which the sailors wanted to send home. The shipping of printed matter was actually not intended, which is why there were no stamps on board for the postage value of 3 Pfennig valid for this.

The chief paymaster had acted in consultation with the commandant , Captain Hermann da Fonseca-Wollheim , but did not receive the subsequent approval of the Reich Post Office , but was reprimanded for his action. The manufacture of the temporary solution contradicted the clear provisions of the Post , according to which cash postage had to be made in the event of a brand defect . The Reichspost therefore did not officially recognize this temporary issue.

Further circumstances in connection with the temporary arrangement are dubious. For example, took the judge assigned to the cancellation of the brands petty officer with two or more brand halves franked postcards and letters , even though this regular brands were available. In addition, after returning home, the same man made overprint forgeries and canceled them with the real, backdated ship postmark, to which he apparently still had access.

Legal consequences

The Imperial Navy Ship Post then banned temporary expenses.

Today's philatelic rating

Special postmark: Kleiner Kreuzer Vineta / 100 years Vineta provisional (here incorrectly called Kleiner Kreuzer )

The Vineta provisional solution is highly controversial in philately . Many consider it a work of art and not a philatelic object to be recognized. Nevertheless, it is a sought-after rarity.

The disputed points also include the fact that the MICHEL catalog, the leading stamp catalog, assigned this temporary edition its own catalog number, although this is actually only intended for officially confirmed stamps. Therefore, the status of the main number ('67') was withdrawn from the Vineta provisional solution between the MICHEL catalogs 1999 and 2003/2004 and classified as a variant of use ('AI'). Since then, the auction proceeds have also lagged behind the original expectations and calls. In November 2009 at an auction with a starting price of 3,000 euros, the knockdown was 3,300 euros; the valuation according to the catalog at that time was 10,000 euros.

The division of the stamp into the “German Reich” collection area is also controversial among collectors and there is an opinion that the brand belongs to the “German foreign post offices and colonies” collection area.

The only known copy with an inverted print sold for 75,000 Swiss francs at an auction held by the Corinphila auction house in Zurich on June 6, 2002 , while the “normal” copies sold at the same time between 5,000 and 17,000 Swiss francs.
