Hermann von Stahleck
Hermann von Stahleck († September 20, 1156 ) was the only son of Count Goswin von Stahleck and Luitgard von Hengebach , the widow of Heinrich I von Katzenelnbogen . He was the half-brother of Heinrich II. Von Katzenelnbogen, who was born in 1138 by King Konrad III. was raised to count . Through his marriage to Gertrud von Schwaben , the daughter of Duke Friedrich I , he was the brother-in-law of King Konrad III. and Friedrich Barbarossa's uncle .
Hermann inherited the title and property in eastern Franconia as Count von Bildhausen (today Maria-Bildhausen, a district of Münnerstadt and in Höchstadt ) and on the Rhine ( Stahleck Castle above Bacharach ) from his father and was with the Palatinate in 1142/1143 from his brother-in-law Rhein invested after the previous incumbent, the Babenberg Henry II. Jasomirgott the Markgrafschaft Austria took over, and he against the claims of relatives of Henry's predecessors, especially of Count Otto the Younger of himself Salm-Rheineck prevailed by taking him prisoner and 1149 was strangled on the Schönburg .
From 1147 to 1148 Hermann took part in the Wendenkreuzzug .
Disputes with the archbishops of Mainz earned him the ban on church twice. Friedrich Barbarossa sentenced his uncle to a dishonorable punishment for breaching the peace, carrying a dog , which does not seem to have burdened the relationship between the two in the long term, as Hermann continued to perform in the vicinity of Friedrich until his death.
Hermann was first buried in the Ebrach monastery . After the completion of the monastery church of the Cistercian Abbey of Bildhausen , a subsidiary of Ebrach, which he founded shortly before his death , he was reburied there. He received a tomb in the choir of the monastery church. In 1825, when the monastery church was being prepared for complete demolition, his tombstone was wanted to be brought to the nearby Salzburg Castle , whereupon it broke and has been lost since then.
After Hermann's death, Friedrich Barbarossa passed the Palatinate on to his half-brother Konrad the Staufer .
