Konrad der Staufer from the Staufer dynasty (* around 1134–1136; † November 8 or 9, 1195 ) was from 1156 to 1195 Count Palatine near the Rhine .

Life

Konrad der Staufer was the son of Friedrich II , Duke of Swabia from his second marriage to Agnes von Saarbrücken . Konrad der Staufer grew up in Alzey .

He was a half-brother of Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa , who came from his father's first marriage to Judith Welf . Barbarossa awarded him in 1156 on the occasion of the Reichstag in Regensburg the Palatine dignity . The rights to the bailiwick of the Cistercian monastery at Schönau near Heidelberg , the Worms Hochstiftvogtei and the family property of the Staufers in Speyergau and Wormsgau were transferred to him.

Konrad was married to Irmingard von Henneberg († 1197), a daughter of Count Bertold I von Henneberg, Burgrave of Würzburg . Through this marriage, the imperial bailiwick of Lorsch Monastery came into his possession.

Intent on expanding his sphere of influence, Konrad der Staufer got into a dispute with the archbishops of Trier and Cologne . The best known conflict is the Rheineck feud . In 1164 Konrad tried to get Rheineck Castle , which was originally from the Palatinate, under his control. In the meantime the castle had come into the hands of the Archbishop of Cologne. Both adversaries met at Andernach for a battle, which never came about because Konrad did not dare attack because of the numerical superiority of the Cologne team.

Konrad is considered to be the founder of the city of Heidelberg .

Konrad was buried in the Schönau monastery in the Odenwald .

progeny

With Irmingard von Henneberg he had Agnes († May 9, 1204, buried in St. Marien in Stade ) as the only child. This heir married on February 3, 1194 at Stahleck Castle Heinrich the Elder of Braunschweig , 1195–1212 Count Palatine near Rhine.

Theisen points out that the half-brother of Emperor Friedrich I was married to Irmgard von Henneberg (* 1146/47, † 1197) from 1161 at the earliest. Her parents were Berthold (I.) von Henneberg and Bertha von Putelendorf (Goseck). His father-in-law was therefore the Burgrave of Würzburg.
