Hernandarias is a city and district in the Alto Paraná department in Paraguay. It is located 8 km north of Ciudad del Este directly on the Itaipú reservoir on the border with Brazil near the Río Acaray and Río Paraná . It is the oldest city in the department. The district has about 79,000 inhabitants.

history

The place where the Acaray people lived was discovered by the Jesuits in 1629 . They called him Natividad de Nuestra Señora del Acaray . It was later called Campo de Tacuru Pucú (field of high termite mounds) because of the large number of sand mounds that termites had built throughout the area. In 1857, President Carlos Antonio López built a port to improve the use of mate and wood. In 1896 the place was officially named after the governor of Paraguay and the Río de la Plata region Hernando Arias de Saavedra . Due to the strong growth, the place was raised to a municipality of the first category in 1980.

economy

The reason for the enormous growth was the construction of the two hydropower plants Acaray and Itaipú in the immediate vicinity, which were put into operation in 1968 and 1982. In addition, agriculture and livestock are also practiced in the district. The main products are: soy, mint, corn, coffee, cotton, rice, beans, wheat, cruciferous milkweed and palm hearts. There are also factories for textile, plastic and fertilizer production.
