Herpangina: reddening and swelling of the uvula with sharply demarcated ulcerations
Herpangina with clearly visible ulcerations in a 20-year-old patient.

The Herpangina (also Zahorsky's disease ) is a disease of the oral mucosa , which preferably occurs in young children.

It is caused by an infection with the Coxsackie virus (type A).

It mainly affects the palatal arches , but sometimes also the tonsils . Evident are then characteristic blisters or shallow ulcers with dark red Hof . Fever and fatigue almost always accompany them , often also vomiting and headaches . The disease only lasts a few days and is uncomplicated. Since the clinical signs are characteristic, there is no need to detect the virus in stool or antibodies in blood serum . Therapy is symptomatic .
