Legend to the story

A farmer found an intact host while plowing in 1384 . A chapel was built at the site in 1389 , which subsequently served as a place of pilgrimage . The church has been Protestant since 1530.

Mary Altar

The Marien Altar stands in the middle of the nave of the Herrgottskirche in Creglingen and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is one of the most famous works by Tilman Riemenschneider . The style of the figurative execution speaks for an execution in the years after the completion of the Rothenburg Holy Blood reredos around 1505–1508.

The altar is 9.20 meters high and 3.68 meters wide. It consists of the predella , the central shrine, two side wings and the sprinkling .

In the predella, the adoration of the wise men, the reliquary compartment (the monstrance with the host was lost) and the extra-biblical story of how the five-year-old Jesus gives a speech to adults from a pulpit can be seen in three niches of equal size.

The Assumption of Mary is depicted in the altarpiece. Left and right are the twelve apostles. The burst at the height of the altar shows the coronation of Mary. God the Father sits on the left and the Son on his throne on the right. In the left wing you can see the Visitation at the top, the Annunciation to Mary at the bottom and the birth of Jesus at the right wing at the top, and the presentation of Jesus in the temple at the bottom .

Every year on August 25th, the light falls through the west rosette onto the altar in such a way that the viewer can understand the Assumption of Mary with his own eyes. Originally this date was August 15th: the feast of the Assumption of Mary. Due to the calendar reform at the end of the 16th century, this day was postponed.

More altars

The right side altar, a winged altar made in the second half of the 15th century, is dedicated to the evangelist John and Saint Lucia , who, together with Saint Ottilia , like Luzia a patron saint of the blind, are carved figures in the altar shrine. The two outer wings show the Annunciation to Mary . The paintings were signed and dated in 1496 by the Windsheim painter Jakob Mülholzer .

The high altar in the church choir also dates from the late 15th century. The central shrine contains the plastic representation of the crucifixion of Christ. The wooden sculptures in the predella are colored busts of St. Christopher and the Apostle Andrew , flanking an Anna herself with the Christ child and a childlike Maria.

The left side altar, a winged altar dating from 1460, is dedicated to John the Baptist and Saint Leonhard , the patron saint of domestic animals. The richly gilded reliefs on the two side wings show scenes from the life of Mary. Saint Sebastian is depicted on the three tips of the altarpiece , who is being attacked by two archers. The three dramatically moving figures are assigned to Erasmus Grasser's circle .
