Construction work on the building began in 1930 at the time of the Great Depression , initiated by businessman Louis Hersh. Building materials were mainly bricks that were common at the time. It was completed a year later. The tower has 14 stories and is 42.6 meters (140 ft ) high. The building was planned by the architects Nathan Myers and Joseph Shanley. The building also has revolutionary ventilation and evacuation systems.
