Hervé Youmbi (* 1973 in Bangui ) is a Central African installation and video artist .

Life

Hervé Youmbi grew up in Cameroon . From 1993 to 1996 he studied at the IFA (Institut de Formation Artistique) in Mbalmayo . He works in the fields of drawing, painting and sculpture. Portraits play a major role in his work. In 1998 he founded the experimental artist collective Cercle Kapsiki together with Hervé Yamguen , Blaise Bang , Salifou Lindou and Jules Wokam . Cercle Kapsiki is based in the K factory in New Bell, one of the poorest and at the same time liveliest districts of Douala . From 2000 to 2001 Youmbi studied at the ESAD (Ecole Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg) in France and discovered the media installation and video for himself.

Youmbi's project Faces of Masks / Faces of the Masks makes the African aesthetic the topic. Aspects of cultural identities that differ due to the conflicts. For the faces of the masks , Hervé Youmbi commissioned craftsmen from Bamileke , who lives in the Cameroon grasslands , to create a Ku'ngang mask that contains the face of a Dogon mask from Mali . During Youmbi's initiation into Ku'ngang Society, these masks became part of the ritual . Youmbi was authorized to film his own ceremony .

The variable installation Totems to Haunt our Dreams shows photographic portraits of his artist friends. These are soft sculpture columns made of stacked shopping bags, each with an artist portrait. The artists wear sunglasses with a logo. The installation is mobile and adaptable. It grows as the circle of artist friends around Youmbi grows and so more portraits emerge. The printed shopping bags can be rolled up or placed flat in two suitcases and thus travel with the artist as airline luggage. The installation is set up again on site. In 2010 Totems to Haunt our Dreams traveled to the Dakar Biennale (May), Johannesburg to the World Cup (June), Cotonou (July) and Kinshasa (October). Totems to Haunt our Dreams was exhibited at the Axis Gallery in Johannesburg in 2011 and at the National Museum of African Art in Washington, DC in 2012 .

Herve Youmbi exhibited regularly in the Espace doual'art in Douala. In 2017 he is invited to participate in the Skulptur.Projekte in Münster .
