Herwarth Röttgen

Herwarth Röttgen (born 1931 in Weimar ) is a German art historian.

Life

Herwarth Röttgen grew up in Weimar and graduated from the humanistic Wilhelm-Ernst-Gymnasium in 1950 . He then studied art history, classical archeology and pre- and early history in Marburg and Munich and received his doctorate in Marburg in 1958 with a dissertation on Konrad Witz . From 1958 to 1961 he was a volunteer at the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg and curated the exhibition catalog of the Germanic National Museum for the 1959 German Protestant Church Congress in Munich . From 1961 to 1974 he was a scholarship holder of the German Research Foundation and research assistant at the Bibliotheca Hertziana Rome.

In 1974 Röttgen became scientific advisor and professor at the University of Göttingen and from 1977 professor and director of the Institute for Art History at the University of Stuttgart . Between 1984 and 1988 he was chairman of the Association of German Art Historians and from 1990 to 1991 Dean of the Faculty of History, Social and Economic Sciences. Röttgen retired in 1997.

Röttgen wrote numerous publications on German late Gothic, baroque and historicism and Italian art from the 16th to 19th centuries. He is an honorary citizen of the city of Arpino in the province of Frosinone in Italy.

Röttgen is married to the speech therapist Marion Hermann-Röttgen .
