Herwig Aldenhoven (born September 7, 1933 in Vienna ; † October 29, 2002 in Bern ) was an Austrian Old Catholic theologian and professor at the then Christian Catholic theological faculty of the University of Bern .

Life

From 1971 to 2000 he taught systematic theology and liturgical science . Although his published work is not particularly large, his teaching and lecturing activities shaped a whole generation of Christian Catholic theologians and pastors. Through his participation in liturgical commissions, he had a decisive influence on the liturgical renewal in the Christian Catholic Church in Switzerland and in general in the Old Catholic churches of the Union of Utrecht . As a member of the Commission for the Orthodox-Old Catholic Dialogue and as an advisor to the Bishops' Conference on numerous theological issues, his theological thinking shaped Old Catholicism far beyond the Swiss borders.

Theological concerns

As a systematic theologian, Aldenhoven dealt primarily with questions of ecclesiology and the theology of the Trinity, especially the Filioque question. He thought through his theology consistently with recourse to patristicism and received orthodox theology, in particular from authors such as Georg Florovsky , Vladimir Lossky , Paul Evdokimov , Ioannis Karmiris , Nikos Nissiotis and Ioannis Zizioulas from the Greeks and Dumitru Stăniloae from the Romanians .

In liturgical studies, Aldenhoven dealt intensively with the structure of the Eucharistic prayer , on which he obtained his doctorate in 1971 under the title Offering and Epicreading in the Eucharistic Prayer in Bern. The results of this research were incorporated into the liturgical revision of the Christian Catholic Church in Switzerland.
