Vladimir Lossky
Vladimir Nikolaïevitch Lossky ( Russian Владимир Николаевич Лосский , Wladimir Nikolajewitsch Losski ; born June 8, 1903 in Göttingen , † February 7, 1958 in Paris ) was an Orthodox theologian .
Life
His father Nikolai Onufrijewitsch Losski was professor of philosophy at the University of St. Petersburg ; the family was in Göttingen at the time of his birth . Vladimir Lossky spent his youth in Saint Petersburg , where he also attended high school. He attended the trial and execution of Metropolitan Benjamin of Saint Petersburg . These events moved him strongly.
First he studied literature from 1920 at the University of Saint Petersburg . His family was expelled in 1922. He continued his studies in Prague and moved to Paris in 1924 . He studied medieval philosophy at the Sorbonne and was influenced by Etienne Gilson . He completed his studies with a diploma in Paris.
Lossky saw himself in the role of witnessing Orthodox universality in the West. He deepened his studies on the Eastern and Western traditions of Christianity. In 1945 he became the first dean of the Saint-Denys Institute (Paris). He taught dogmatics and church history there until 1953. In particular, his book The mystical theology of the oriental church made him known.
