Olivier Clément

Olivier-Maurice Clément (born November 17, 1921 in Aniane , Hérault ; died January 15, 2009 in Paris ) was a French Orthodox theologian , philosopher and historian .

Live and act

Olivier Clément was born in Aniane in Languedoc into an agnostic family. He studied history at the University of Montpellier , where he became interested in the history of Christianity and the Eastern churches . He later drew closer to the Orthodox Church through the influence of exiled Russian theologians in Paris (especially Vladimir Lossky ) and reading Berdyayev , Dostoyevsky and the Church Fathers . He was baptized at the age of 30 in a Paris parish belonging to the Russian Orthodox Church . He also worked as a secondary school teacher in Paris and did a remarkable job at the St. Sergius Institute for Orthodox Theology in Paris, where he was Professor of Comparative Theology and Moral Theology . He wrote theological works on church history, philosophy and literary criticism. Among the contemporary Orthodox theologians who carefully dealt with questions of modernity, he was distinguished by a powerful and poetic reflection that was not only rooted in the tradition of the Church, but also creative and renewing. Olivier Clément was the interlocutor of prominent spiritual figures of his time, including Patriarch Athinagoras , Pope John Paul II , the Romanian priest and theologian Dumitru Stăniloae , the archimandrite Sophroni Sakharov from the monastery near Maldon , Frère Roger ( Communauté de Taizé ) and Andrea Riccardi , the founder of the Community of Sant'Egidio .

Olivier Clément is the author of numerous books, some of which have been included in prominent ranks , such as B. Que sais-je? , Mythes et religions or Spiritualité orientale , to name just a few. He wrote the foreword to the Journal de la félicité ( Jurnalul fericirii ) by Nicolae Steinhardt in the UNESCO collection of representative works .

Some of his writings have also been translated into German, such as Taizé. Finding a meaning for life or the sea in a shell. Notes from an unconventional Christian .
