history

The founder, Abbé Charles Eleonore Dufriche-Desgenettes (1778–1860)

The religious association of the Arch-Brotherhood of the Holy and Immaculate Heart of Mary came into being at the beginning of the 19th century almost at the same time as the movement of the “Miraculous Medal” in France and is still active today. Its headquarters is the Notre-Dame des Victoires (“Our Lady of Victories”) basilica in Paris . After the French Revolution, the church, which was commissioned by King Louis XIII. built and completed in 1740, reopened as a parish church in 1809. The critical church conditions at that time inspired Abbé Charles Eleonore Dufriche-Desgenettes to do pastoral work in order to bring about a religious change and to lead people back to the Christian faith, since only a few believers in his community attend church services.

On December 3, 1836 - according to the tradition of the Brotherhood - he received the inspiration during a mass: "Consecrate your parish to the holy and immaculate Heart of Mary, refuge for sinners!" Following the inner voice, in 1836 he drafted the statutes for a prayer association, which set itself the goal of devotion to the heart of Mary and prayer for the conversion of sinners.

The newly created "Brotherhood of the Holy and Immaculate Heart of Mary for the Conversion of sinners" was founded in 1838 by Pope Gregory XVI. raised to the rank of arch brotherhood and recommended for the universal church. In the following four years the association spread to many parishes around the world.

In 1843, on the instructions of the first Archbishop of Munich, Lothar Anselm von Gebsattel , a branch of the Arch Brotherhood was established in the Frauenkirche . The full name of the Herz-Mariä-Fraternity, founded on March 11, 1843 based on the French model in Munich, is "Brotherhood of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart of Mary for the Conversion of Sinners - at the Cathedral Church of Our Lady in Munich".

On May 13, 1955, Cardinal Joseph Wendel revitalized the Arch-Brotherhood in Munich. In the post-war years, their number rose to several thousand members. The basis for this is provided by an already existing group of Fatima friends (popularly known as "Thirteen"), who have been making a monthly pilgrimage to Maria Eich since 1925 (even during the Second World War ). The new founding praeses is the later cathedral pastor Hans Hillreiner. From this the tradition develops in Munich that the respective cathedral priest is also appointed president of the Herz-Mariä-Fraternity. Dom administrator Hans-Georg Platschek has held this office since September 2014.

Since 1957 the Herz-Mariä-Fraternity in Munich has also been called the “messenger of God's love” because it sends parcels to what was then known as the “East Zone” and passes donations on to the poor. For example, in 1979, a church, a missionary station and a seminary were built in Tanzania with donations from the “Brotherhood of the Holy and Immaculate Heart of Mary for the Conversion of sinners at the Cathedral of Our Lady in Munich”.

In 1985, Friedrich Cardinal Wetter celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Brotherhood of Mary after the war and at the same time the 60th anniversary of the monthly pilgrimage to Maria Eich . Until today the pilgrimage takes place on the 13th of each month and on the Sunday closest to the 13th. At the end of the 1980s, the Munich Arch Brotherhood began to shrink, but the number of members has been growing steadily since 2007.
