Heart of Jesus (Bechhofen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Herz Jesu is a church named after the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Roman Catholic parish of Bechhofen ( Herrieden dean's office in the diocese of Eichstätt ).

Parish

Bechhofen has been Evangelical Lutheran since the Reformation. In 1925 only 2% of the population were Roman Catholic. During the Second World War, expellees of Roman Catholic denominations came to Bechhofen. In 1946 there were 860 Catholics, in 1947 1200. Bechhofen became the curate of St. Laurentius (Großenried) . Services could initially be celebrated in the Protestant St. John's Church .

In 1952, a plot of land was acquired on Ansbacher Strasse. With the help of the building order of the clergyman Werenfried van Straaten , construction of the church began on July 18, 1955. In 1956 the church was consecrated under the Eichstätter Bishop Joseph Schröffer . In 1963, Bechhofen got his own pastor, Georg Schmid. In 1967 the Curate of the Sacred Heart was elevated to a parish.

Today Herz Jesu belongs to the parish association Burgheide.

Church building

The church is a simple saddle roof structure that differs little from the surrounding houses. An entrance porch with a cross on the flat roof is on the east side. To the right of it there is a round window. On the north and south sides, the nave has three axes, each with rectangular windows arranged in pairs. The tower is one story higher than the nave and also has a gable roof with a simple cross on it. On the north side there is a rectangular window, on the south side there is the sacristy with a pent roof. There are rectangular sound openings on the north and south sides of the bell storey. A fountain has been located on the left in front of the entrance area since 1976, with its four coats of arms intended to commemorate the expellees from East Prussia, Sudetenland, Silesia and the Carpathian Mountains. A wooden crucifix has stood on the right in front of the entrance area since 1988. In 1986/87 a parish and youth home was built, which is attached to the west side of the tower and the sacristy. At the same time the church was renovated.

The interior of the single-nave hall closes with a flat wooden ceiling. It is connected to the choir on the west side. To the left of it is a statue of the Madonna and Child behind a blue background, to the right of it a statue of Jesus, also behind a blue background. The altar is in the choir. Above that is a larger than life sculpture of Jesus crucified on the wall, which was created by the sculptor Guido Martini .
