The current nave was built as a chapel in 1486 and probably already had a bell tower, which can be deduced from a still existing bell from 1405. The late Gothic choir and sacristy were built in 1515–1518. 1740–1742 the church was redesigned in the Rococo style. The work was carried out by the Ellingen court mason Josef Feuerstein together with local craftsmen. The windows and the exterior facade were also redesigned. The ceiling fresco was created by the painter Johann Michael Zinck from Neresheim .

The stucco work was carried out by Johann Antoni Voltz from Ellingen and Hannibal Schnell. Above the choir arch, the coats of arms of the builders, the regional commander Karl Heinrich von Hornstein (1716–1743) and Franz Sigismund von Satzenhofen (1743–1748) can be seen.

The stucco emblems on the double gallery were attached in 1765 for the anniversary of the Sebastian Brotherhood . The altars from the Rococo period were replaced by neo-Romanesque ones around 1860 . The current high altar was bought and reworked by Niederscheyern around 1869 .

Renovations took place in 1923, 1948 and 1971. In addition, the roof turret was renewed in 1989.
